The Stick Opening Does More than You Would Expect

A wrap closed at the base means the customer has to pull the whole corn dog out to eat it, which defeats the point of the stick.

An opening sized to the stick lets the sleeve sit against the batter while the stick passes through. Too wide and the sleeve slides down; too narrow and staff fight it during a rush.

Can a hot dog sleeve be used for corn dogs?

Not well. A hot dog sleeve is closed at the base and sized to a soft roll; a corn dog needs the stick through and a board that copes with fryer oil. The shapes look similar and behave very differently.

Does the batter stick to the board?

Fresh from the fryer it can, on an uncoated surface. A coated or lined inner face reduces it, and letting the corn dog drain briefly before sleeving makes more difference than any board choice.
